INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Though an application process, SAW offers 8-week internships to 12 college age students in the Arts. This internship program is an excellent opportunity for college students and recent college graduates to immerse themselves in a unique and creative environment, explore their own artwork and contribute to a busy arts center.
Interns are an integral part of the SAW staff. Interns work an average of 30 hours a week for the SAW, in addition to daily community duties. The nature of the intern workload is diverse. Much of the work is outdoors and labor intensive, devoted to the maintenance to the Sculpture Park and facilities, such as cleaning, grounds keeping, the organizing of materials, setting up and breaking down events. Interns are also expected to assist staff in the hosting of guests and resident artists. This includes providing orientations, giving tours or assisting workshop instructors.
When interns are not working for the park they are able to take advantage of SAW’s facilities and focus on the development of their own work. Interns are required to participate weekly studio visits, as well as present a digital presentation of their work to the group. All interns are asked to provide a piece of work made at SAW for an Intern Exhibition at the end of September.
Interns are provided with a tent platform, food, studio space, discount on one workshop during their stay and the experience of working in a professional artist community.
Our outdoor kitchen is always open and well stocked with food for people of any diet. Everyone helps themselves to breakfast, lunch and snacks through out the day. All residents cook dinner once a week on a rotating bases, as well as follow all guidelines that allow SAW to continue its mission as a green community. This includes, composting, taking advantage of the food grown in our garden and locally, recycling and reducing waste. SAW; staff, interns, and resident artists are expected to bring their own bedding. Everyone must clean up after themselves and understand the balance of communal living. All artists must provide their own materials.
SAW’s grounds foster communal studio practice while providing enough space for the solitude inclined. Our barns and outdoor studio spaces are malleable allowing each artist to set up their space to be the most beneficial. Artists are also welcome to move through out the grounds during the stay. The 24 hours facilities include access to the hand tool closet, wood shop and welding shop. There are also gantries and a boom truck on site to assist in the making of larger scale work.
Please remember that we are a refurbished dairy farm and all facilities are rustic and effected greatly by the environment and weather.
The two 8-week sessions during this summer are:
June 1 – August 3
August 5 – October 4
There is also one Administrative Internship available, which will be for the duration of our open season (June 1 – September 31). If you are interested in this opportunity please email info@salemartworks.com to request further information.
